What a wonderful effort from our Carlton Cornwall member Selina Goddard. She maintained the club\’s proud tradition by winning the women\’s singles at the Heartland National Open championships in New Plymouth on January 8th.
Selina, a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, claimed her second national championship – winning the fours in 2014 – and 27th title for the club. It is the first time a member of the club has won the women\’s singles.
Her effort was even more memorable as she only entered the singles at the latest nationals. After beating World Championship representative Katelyn Inch (Christchurch) 21-18 in the semi-finals, Selina totally dominated the final against experienced Reen Stratford (Whanganui).
Selina won seven early ends in a row to take a commanding 13-1 lead on the slick Paritutu green. Soon it was 16-3 and 20-6. Reen picked up a single and a two but Selina was quick to nail a famous victory – taking a single on the next end and winning 21-9.
Our heartiest congratulations, Selina – from all the Carlton Cornwall members.
