NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2010
Welcome to the new bowling season at Carlton Cornwall Bowls. We hope and trust that everyone has had a good break and are now looking forward to the game. When the rain finally stops we will hopefully get some growth on the greens in time for summer. The Maniototo baubles on our new “C’ green have taken and good cover looks promising. Work on “A” green has been delayed by the rain and we need a few hot dry days before the baubles are planted.
Mal MacElvanna, our Events Manager , has arranged a full and exciting program for the season with a lot more activity at the Club. Hong Kong ( two-four –two) Pairs on a Friday afternoon starting at 1pm followed by Twilight bowls and a BBQ in the evening. The MacElliott is programmed for anniversary weekend with championship mixed pairs being a new competition.
Opening Day is on Saturday 11 September. Opening ceremony at 4pm followed by Happy Hour and dinner at 6pm. All welcome. We will play bowls, weather and greens, permitting. For catering purposes please RSVP to Alan Crowe. Phone 624-6314 or Mal MacElvanna on 027 244 9959.
It is with sadness that we record the passing away of Glenda Brodie Coltman. Glenda served on the Executive until recently and had a long association with the Club. Her grandfather, Mr A.R. Coltman, whilst playing for Carlton won the Dominion singles titles in 1929 and his brother was President in 1934. Glenda’s father Mr B.H. Coltman was President in 1947.
A lot of work has been done around the Club in recent weeks. Thanks to the volunteers who woked with Mike and Nick with the soiling and baubles on “C” green. Thanks for a great job and well done to Miro Katavich, Tony Matulovich, Miro Dragicevich, Jeff Collier, Patrick Ng, Mal MacElvanna, John Corse-Scott and Patrick Stanaway.
With the new concrete paths around ‘A’ Green we have had to carry out significant earthworks and planting of new shrubs and trees with many of the plants being donated by the Cornwall Park Trust Board. Special thanks to Tony Matulovich and Richard Stanaway for all the hard work involved. These new gardens are looking great and will improve over time.
Our new pool table was recently installed and is very popular with members. Come along and join us on a Friday night, play a game of pool, or indoor bowls and enjoy a drink and nibbles in front of the open fire. A very pleasant way to spend a winters evening. Thanks Marina for preparing the eats.
We have also had a number of books donated to the Club and we have established a lending library free to members. We only ask that these books are returned to the Club after reading. Our thanks to the members for their donations. If you have spare books, they will be very welcome.
